Sports Minister Inaugurates Cycling Velodrome

New Delhi: June 29, 2010

 

Dr. M. S Gill, Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports  today inaugurated the newly built Cycling Velodrome in the presence of Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organising Committee, Commonwealth Games, 2010 and Shri S.S. Dhindsa, President, Cycling Federation of India.  The new velodrome is constructed at the cost of Rs. 150 crore to suit the latest international requirements of Track events for Commonwealth Games.  It is fully covered, air-conditioned and has 250 m long Timber Track with a seating capacity of 3800.

                Speaking on the occasion , Dr. Gill complimented all officials and CPWD engineers  for completing the construction of Cycling Velodrome in record 17 months.  He further stated that rest of the stadia will also be delivered to the Organising Committee in the next few days.  He said that now focus should shift from construction of stadia to the actual conduct of the games.  He also requested the Chairman, Organising Committee  to consider keeping a certain number of  free tickets for students of Schools/Universities of Delhi so that they can also watch the Games and get motivated. 

                On the occasion, Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organising Committee, Commonwealth Games, 2010 and Shri S.S. Dhindsa, President, Cycling Federation of India also complimented all agencies involved in construction of such wonderful sporting facilities.

                The new look Velodrome is the first of its kind in the country, which has Timber Cycling Track and meets all the international standards including 2200 Lux Level Sports Lighting and Public Address System with state of the art line array speakers for concert level sound requirements.

                The entire stadium with its unique structural system, unique geometry of seating bowl, state-of-the-art Electrical and Mechanical services and marvelous architectural features, is constructed in a record time of 17 months by Central Public Works Department (CPWD).  The Velodrome has been certified by UCI (International Cycling federation) as Category 1 Cycling Velodrome. 

                In his communication to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), UCI Honorary Vice President, Mr. Ray Godkin has said"The Delhi Velodrome is an absolutely marvelous facility of the highest standard and on completion probably would only be surpassed by the Beijing Olympic Velodrome". 

 

HIGHLIGHTS OF FACILITIES

·         Built at a cost of Rs. 150 crore.

·         Seating Capacity 3800

·         Comprising of Ground Floor, First Floor, Second Floor, Seating arena and playing arena.

·         Field of Play- 7m wide,250 m long Timber Cycling track with 4 m safety zone made of Siberian Pine Wood.

·         Roofing  – A unique felt bat type roofing covering the entire Velodrome with Galvalume radially cut sheeting in two layers separated by Rockwool thermal insulation.

·         Sports lighting for 2200 lux suitable for HDTV transmission.

·         Equipped with Green Building features like thermal insulation of entire roof, gypsum board partitions and wall panelings, energy efficient lighting fixtures etc.

                       

            The entire stadium will be under electronic surveillance through fixed and PTZ cameras connected to central control room, which will have integrated network for connecting various facilities, to meet the operational requirements of various tournaments.

Vice-President Inaugurates Statistical Day Celebrations

Separate Price Index for Rural And Urban Areas to Reflect Accurate Picture

New Delhi: June 29, 2010

 

 

Vice-President of India, Shri M.Hamid Ansari has stressed the need of timely and reliable analysis of growing and diverse economy like us which has complex variables affecting human and economic development. He was Inaugurating Statistical Day Celebrations being organized by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation here today.


Referring the theme of 'Child Statistics' adopted for this years Statistics Day, the Vice-President said that the systematic compilation of comprehensive statistical information on children can guide our policy makers and planners engaged in bettering the situation of our children. He observed that children of the country constitute a potential demographic resource that could propel the nation to higher orbit of economic progress and human development.

Addressing the function, the Minister of Statistics & Programme Implementation and Coal, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal said that the Government is working on renewed and modernized statistical system to monitor and measure rapid economic and social changes. The new system would help State Statistical Organizations to work towards common national standards relating to key statistical activities and to improve the credibility, timeliness and accuracy of data required at Central and State levels.


Shri Jaiswal said that his ministry is developing Rural and Urban Consumer Price Index separately for rural and urban areas to reflect more accurate price behaviour of various goods and services. The new indices would be released before the close of the year 2010-11.


Stressing for better and accurate analysis of datas, the Minister said it should be ensured that right information goes into the right hand at the right time and also it is properly described and imparted in the appropriate form to those who need it. It is, therefore, important that along with the latest data, adequate explanation should also be given so that the reports are balanced and accurately, he observed.


On the occasion, the Vice-President also conferred National Award in Statistics to Prof. Alok Dev. The award has been constituted in the memory of Prof. P.V. Sukhatme. He also released "Mid-Term Statistical Review of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Report, 2009" brought out by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. "Energy Statistics-2010" was also released on the occasion by Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal. Presentation of this year theme "Child Statistics" were also made on the occasion.

International Centre for Automotive Technology, Manesar has now launched Online Certification System (OCS) to speed up certification and homologation, related processes. The Online Certification System was launched by Sh. B.S.Meena, Secretary, Deptt. of Heavy Industries in the presence of Sh. Rajiv Bansal, Joint Secretary, Deptt. of Heavy Industries, Sh. Rajesh Singh, CEO and Project Director National Automative Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) and Sh. Dinesh Tyagi, Director iCAT.


Online Certification System will help enhance transparency and efficiency in all the critical steps of certification system. Reduced use of paper and less requirement of physical presence of customer will be major USPs of this system. In line with best global practices, OCS would also mean that manufacturers around the world can access their data 24x7x365. All processes such as Type Approval, Conformity of Production (COP), Research & Development projects related to vehicles, engines, generator sets and automotive components are supported by the system. Multi-user and multi-disciplinary options will ensure uniform access to all employees within a particular knowledge domain. Appropriate checks and systems built into OCS will ensure strict control and confidentiality at all times. Another benefit of this system is that clients can track the status of their projects anytime using the system. A single window will give updates on specifications, timelines and costs.
