Dear Palash,

Here's another case of the government not fulfilling its promises. The Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) [1] has failed to satisfy electricity aspirations of villages in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

The national scheme focuses on extending grid connections to enable electricity access to rural India and provide essential energy for schools and health centres. However Greenpeace and other civil society groups conducted audits to find out if the scheme has delivered 100 percent rural electrification as promised. Our results show that just providing grid connections does not guarantee power supply and many are still left in the dark.

Our campaign in Bihar highlighted how small-scale renewable energy projects can bring power to the people. The next step is to organise state and national level consultations to highlight the inefficiency in RGGVY and demand that renewable energy should be incorporated to ensure 100% rural electrification. We have come so far because of the contributions made by individuals like you.

Can you support this work by making a contribution?

To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not take financial support from government bodies or business groups. Donations from individuals like you help further the struggle to keep our planet safe.

The government plans to extend the RGGVY scheme in the upcoming 12th Five year plans. These social audits and the consultations will help show the need to look at renewable energy to provide clean electricity for all in India.

Years of campaigning result in victories. This is possible because of the support from people like you. Help the effort to promote renewable energy. Make a contribution now. Thanks a billion!
