Advani's black money hunt crashes on Sonia wall

NEW DELHI: BJP leader LK Advani on Friday retracted his charge that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her late husband Rajiv Gandhi held accounts in Swiss banks and apologised to her.

A BJP task force under Advani's charge, which prepared its report on black money based on unsubstantiated charges and insinuations in western tabloids, had claimed that the involvement of the Congress president's family was the chief reason for 'lack of action' on the part of the government on the issue of black money.

In a letter to Sonia, Advani expressed regret that her name and that of her late husband were mentioned in the task force report. He said that had Sonia denied this earlier, the task force would have taken her denial into account. "Even so, I deeply regret the distress caused to you," he said in the letter dated February 16. It was released by the BJP on Friday after news of the communication became public.

"On my return from Kolkata last night I found your letter dated 15th February awaiting me. I am happy that you have denied the reports relating to you and your family alluded to in the Task Force's Report on Black Money," Advani said in the letter.

The four-member task force comprising S Gurumurthy, former IB director Ajit Doval, Professor R Vadiyanathan and advocate Mahesh Jethmalani had pointed an accusing finger at the Nehru-Gandhi family.

The report, which relied on 'documents,' whose existence are being denied by investigating agencies, had also built fanciful theories to target senior Congress leaders like Ahmed Patel .

The report had referred to in detail charges of Congress leaders' proximity to Hasan Ali . The report, which referred to charges made by the lawyer during a TV talk show, flaunted them as proof of a nexus between Congress leaders and Ali.

There has been unease in BJP over this report driven by Advani. Many senior leaders were not in agreement with the task force's plan to drag senior political leaders and their family members into controversies without being sure about the credibility of documents before the panel.

BJP leader LK Advani came close to admitting that the documents before the panel were not quite reliable when he said the panel would not have included Sonia Gandhi's name had she issued a denial.

"These kinds of arguments will only hurt the credibility of the exercise that we carried out. The report has embarrassed the party and dented the campaign against black money," said a BJP leader.

Chasing a mammoth victory target of 371 runs, Bangladesh managed 283/9 in their 50 overs as Munaf Patel took four wickets.

Munaf took his fourth wicket when he trapped Naeem Islam plumb in front of the wicket to reduce Bangladesh to 275/7 in 46.3 overs.

Munaf took his third wicket when he clean bowled Mahmudullah to reduce Bangladesh to 261/6 in 44.3 overs.

Zaheer Khan had Mushfiqur Rahim caught by substitute fielder Suresh Raina in the covers to reduce Bangladesh to 248/5 in 42.3 overs.

Rahim hit 2 fours in his 25-run knock.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan hit 55 off 50 balls before Yusuf Pathan had him caught by Harbhajan Singh at deep mid-wicket.

Shakib hit 5 fours in his knock before falling in an effort to accelerate the Bangladesh innings.

Munaf Patel took his second wicket when he had Tamim Iqbal caught by Yuvraj Singh at short mid-wicket to reduce Bangladesh to 188/3 in 32.1 overs.

Iqbal hit 70 but could not break the shackles as the required run rate for Bangladesh climbed to 10 runs per over.

Harbhajan Singh had Junaid Siddique stumped by Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to reduce Bangladesh to 129/2 in 23.1 overs.

The breakthrough came after Tamim Iqbal and Siddique put up a 50-run stand for the second wicket taking Bangladesh's score over the 100-run mark.

Bangladesh lost their first wicket with 56 runs on the board when opener Imrul Kayes edged a Munaf Patel delivery onto his stumps.

Iqbal and Kayes gave Bangladesh a flying start bringing up the team's 50 in 5 overs before Munaf struck in his first over.

Earlier, Virender Sehwag's career-best 175 and Virat Kohli's fifth century powered India to 370/4.

Kohli reached his century off 83 deliveries with the help of 2 sxies and 8 fours.

Sehwag hit 5 sixes and 14 fours in his career-best 175 before he edged a Shakib Al Hasan delivery onto his stumps.

Sehwag reached his century off 94 balls.

Bangladesh spinner Mahmudullah clean bowled Gautam Gambhir (39) in the 24th over to break the dangerous looking second wicket partnership.

Sehwag and Gambhir continued India charge after losing Sachin Tendulkar to a freak run out and added 83-run partnership for the second wicket.

Gambhir slammed three fours in his 39-ball innings in the match.

Sehwag completed his 37th one-day fifty with a big six as he raced to half-century in just 45 balls.

A horrible mix-up with Sehwag ended Tendulkar's (28) stay on crease. Sachin was run out by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan in the eleventh over. The master blaster hit four boundaries in his 29-ball innings.

Put in to bat first, India openers added run-a-ball 69 runs partnership at Shere Bangla National stadium.

The dashing openers took India's score to 50 in just 8.5 overs, when Tendulkar slammed his fourth boundary of the innings.

Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and decided to field against co-hosts India in the tournament-opener on Saturday.

Dhoni and his men are eager to settle the score after Bangladesh stunned them in 2007 and kick start their campaign on a positive note at the Shere Bangla National stadium.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have so far been content with an odd upset and have been generally looked upon as underachievers but the tigers look to shrug off that tag when they lock horns with India at home.

Though they have just five victories from 20 World Cup matches to show, Bangladesh has the distinction of beating Pakistan on debut during the 1999 edition and ousting India and defeating South Africa four years ago.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (C), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam.

Umpires: Steve Davis (AUS) and Kumar Dharmasena (SRI)
TV umpire: Billy Doctrove (WIS)
Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI)

Pitch conditions: A hard wicket that is expected to help the slow bowlers in the later stages of the game. The team bowling second could find the ball difficult to grip if late evening dew arrives as predicted.

PM directs CBI probe into CWG telecast deal
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has directed reverting Doordarshan Director General Aruna Sharma to her parent cadre and also seeking explanation from her and the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati BS Lalli on the allegations made against them.

Dr. Singh referred the Shunglu Committee Report on Host Broadcasting issues relating to the Commonwealth Games to the CBI on Friday.

He has also asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to recommend an appropriate course of action within two weeks

Sharma belongs to the Madhya Pradesh cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

Dr. Singh has also ordered review of the claims for payments of dues by the London-based SIS LIVE, the broadcaster for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and to 'ensure that there is no over-payment'.

The Shunglu Committee had said that the two officials had favoured the SIS LIVE with an exorbitant contract and approved inflated bills, causing a loss of Rs.132 crore to the national exchequer.

If 'over-payment' has been made, action should be taken to ensure the recovery of it, the prime minister said.

World Cup 2011: Sachin Tendulkar promises more aggression

BANGALORE: As he opens the door to room number 2033 at the ITC Royal Gardenia hotel in Bangalore, the demigod who resides in it apologises for the mess inside. It is immediately evident that Sachin Tendulkar is every bit the unassuming man the world knows him to be.

"These guys are crazy," Tendulkar says softly, referring to his mates in blue who are now often talking about winning the cup for him. "They just talk about gifting me something."

The nation wants to win this World Cup — but this time, unlike his five earlier campaigns, they want it as much for him as they want it for themselves. Surely, this is Sachin's last chance.

He doesn't want to exaggerate his importance in India .s World Cup campaign, but the more he avoids talk on it, the more it returns to haunt him. "I just want to go out there and play. The rest is," he looks up as if there is someone else who decides.

And through his gestures he makes it obvious that he just can't wait to take it on.

Sachin tries an aggressive pose for the camera, but gives up. "It is all inside. It will come out when I am facing the ball," he says thumping his chest. "You will definitely see a lot of aggression during this edition."

If that statement is a hint of his strategy for the next 40-odd days, it will rouse the expectant nation that has only now, finally come to grips with his recent measured, cut-out-the-risks approach.

Could he go back to his old, swashbuckling ways?

"Sachin's aggression will be crucial to India's fortune this time," says former all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath.
Tendulkar made the most one-day international runs in 2010 (1,562) with an average of 55.90 and scored seven centuries.

Check his strike rate between 2009 and 2011 before he returned from the recently-concluded series in South Africa with injuries: 95.15 in Sri Lanka; 134.21 against South Africa in India; 56.36 in South Africa.
"That has been because of the controlled aggression," says Amarnath.

"He has conquered everything, but the World Cup. I hope he does it this time," says John Wright . "I have seen him when he is the most aggressive. And he is at his aggressive best when he is determined. That determined aggression should work this time."

"I want Sachin to be a World Cup winner and you can see that in his intent. Our styles differ but I can see the same intent in his eyes," says former West Indies cricket legend Viv Richards.

Sachin holds the record for most number of runs (1,796) in World Cups, including four centuries and 13 fifties with a best score of 152 not out against Namibia (2003).

This time, the pressure is huge, Sachin says, because it is happening here in India. And, of course, there's all this hype about it being his last Word Cup.

"Is it?" Sachin asks.

He immediately looks the other way and stares into the camera lens as if he was more curious about hearing an answer rather than being asked that question.

"I feel Sachin has to do it for us. He has to win this World Cup for us and we are waiting for that," says Kapil Dev .

But the master blaster is more concerned about the mess in his room, than the chat around the cup. He remains apologetic.

The room really isn't in much of a mess. There is his kit lying in a corner, a few practice bats leaning on another, his travelling strolley too.

The bed has been removed from the room and the mattress laid on the floor. "It is better," he doesn't give too many explanations and seems to assume that we know what he meant. He moves towards his mobile phone that is hooked to a charger on the writing table. It rarely rings. "I like to listen to music," which he says helps him to unwind. He has a SoundDock set up in his bathroom for his ipod — demigods have quirks too.

As he poses for the camera he squints and keeps going to the photographer to check the shot. During one of those interjections he says that he can only blink with one eye...his right one. "But not always, when I am batting, I often don't blink with either," he says with an impish smile. "You know I always wonder about this even when I am batting. The one-eyed blinking makes it (the eye) look smaller."

What about the World Cup? "Ha, that can never get smaller." It is as big as ever.
"I don't think Tendulkar's records will be surpassed. But a World Cup will be the crowning glory among his enormous achievements," says Brian Lara . "And I am sure he knows it."

Tendulkar changes his attitude according to conditions, be it his fun-loving persona when bowling to his team-mates during net practice and the utterly serious poise when he is padded up and facing the bowlers. Other times might have him giving tips to a Kannada film star, Karthik, who is a regular at the nets whenever the Indian team is in Bangalore.

Training is one thing he couldn't be more serious about, his teammates being the other. His phone rings. He dives for it and rushes out to close the doors of the balcony. "I have to run. They are waiting for me in the bus downstairs. I can't keep them waiting," he says as he prances around to put his kit together.

The entire nation is waiting too, for the one thing that Sachin Tendulkar has not been able to give them yet — the World Cup.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup is the tenth Cricket World Cup and is being hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing countries: IndiaSri Lanka and Bangladesh. It will be Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a Cricket World Cup. The World Cup will usecricket's One Day International format, with fourteen national cricket teams scheduled[1]to compete. The World Cup will take place between February and early April 2011, with the first match played on 19 February 2011 with co-hosts India and Bangladesh facing off at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.[2] The opening ceremony was held on 17 February 2011 at Bangabandhu National StadiumDhaka, two days before the start of the tournament,[3] with the final on 2 April 2011 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The World Cup was also supposed to be co-hosted by Pakistan, but in the wake of the2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights.[4] The headquarters of the organising committee were originally situated in Lahore, but have now been shifted to Mumbai.[5] Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-final.[6]Eight of Pakistan's matches were awarded to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh.[7]

    Host selection

    Bids

The ICC originally announced its decision which countries would host the 2011 World Cup on 30 April 2006. Australia and New Zealand also bid for the tournament, and a successful Australasian bid for the 2011 World Cup would have seen a 50-50 split in games, with the final still up for negotiation. The Trans–Tasman bid, Beyond Boundaries, was the only bid for 2011 delivered to ICC headquarters in Dubai ahead of the 1 March deadline. Considerable merits of the Australasian bid were the superior venues and infrastructure and the total support of both the New Zealand and Australian governments on tax and customs issues during the tournament, according to Cricket Australia chief executiveJames Sutherland.[8] The New Zealand government had also given assurance that Zimbabwe would be allowed to compete in the tournament, following political discussions in the country whether their cricket team should be allowed to tour Zimbabwe in 2005.

ICC President Ehsan Mani said the extra time taken by the Asian block to hand over its bid compliance book had harmed the four-nation bid. However, when the time came to vote, Asia won the hosting rights by seven votes to three.[8] The Pakistan Cricket Board has revealed that it was the vote of the West Indies Cricket Board that swung the matter, as the Asian bid had the support of the four bidding countries along with South Africa and Zimbabwe.[9] It was reported in Pakistani newspaper Dawn that the Asian countries promised to hold fund-raising events for West Indian cricket during the 2007 World Cup, which may have influenced the vote.[10] However, chairman of the Monitoring Committee of the Asian bid, I. S. Bindra, said it was their promise of extra profits in the region of US$ 400 million that swung the vote,[11] that there "was no quid pro quo for their support",[12] and that playing the West Indies had "nothing to do with the World Cup bid".[12]

ICC prefers to rotate World Cup venues between major cricket playing nations. The world cups have been hosted by England (Three times 1975,1979,1983), India/Pakistan 1987, Australia/New Zealand 1992, India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka 1996, England (UK,Netherlands) 1999, South Africa (Zimbabwe,Kenya) 2003, West Indies 2007. For the 2011 World Cup Australia/New Zealand were a strong contender ahead of India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh because they had not hosted a World cup since 1992. In the final voting India won because they argued that since they were a bigger group of countries they should be assigned a World cup more frequently. Due to this, Australia/New Zealand were awarded the 2015 World Cup.

    Format

Late in 2007, the four host nations agreed upon a revised format for the 2011 World Cup identical to the 1996 World Cup, the only change being the no. of teams as it was 12 in 1996 and 14 in 2011. The first round of the tournament will be a round-robin in which the 14 teams are divided into 2 groups of 7 teams each. The 7 teams play each other once with the top 4 from each group qualifying for the quarter-finals.[13]The format ensures that each team gets to play a minimum of 6 matches even if they are ruled out of the tournament due to early defeats.

    Qualification

     Australia  Bangladesh
     New Zealand  England
     Pakistan  India
     Sri Lanka  South Africa
     Zimbabwe  West Indies
    Associate Members
     Canada  Ireland
     Kenya  Netherlands

As per ICC regulations, all 10 full members automatically qualify for the World Cup.

The ICC also organised a qualifying tournament in South Africa to determine which Associate teams would participate in 2011 event. Ireland, who had been the best performing Associate nation since the last World Cup, won the tournament, beating Canada in the final. The Netherlands and Kenya also qualified by virtue of finishing third and fourth respectively.[14]

    Preparations

    Pakistan stripped of co-host status

Pakistan was stripped of its rights as co-host of the 2011 World Cup by the ICC on 17 April 2009[15][16] due to ongoing concerns about the "uncertain security situation" prevailing in the country, especially in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in Lahore during Sri Lanka's tour in 2009.

It is estimated that the PCB will lose $10.5 million due to the tournament being taken away from them.[17] This figure only includes the match-fee of $750,000 per match guaranteed by the ICC. The overall loss to the PCB and the Pakistani economy is expected to be much greater.

On 9 April 2009, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt revealed that they had issued a legal notice to oppose ICC's decision.[18] However, the ICC claims that PCB is still a co-host and they have only shifted the matches out of Pakistan.[19] Pakistan had proposed that South Asia host the 2015 World Cup and Australia/New Zealand host 2011, however this option did not find favour with their co-hosts and hence didn't materialise.[20]

    Allocation of matches

On 11 April 2005, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan announced an agreement about the allocation of games.[21] The original plan involved India hosting the final, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka would host the semi-finals.[22] and the opening ceremony will take place in Bangladesh.[23]

After being stripped of its co-host status, Pakistan made the bid to host its home games in the cities of UAE as a neutral home venue. This is a result of Pakistan playing matches in the preceding months in Abu DhabiDubai and Sharjah. The pitches in these stadiums have also been developed to suit the Pakistani players. This would not harm any timing schedules as there are regular flights from the city of Mumbai toDubai.

However, on 28 April 2009, the ICC announced the re-allocation of matches originally intended to be played in Pakistan. As a result, India will now host 29 matches across eight venues including the final and one semi-final; Sri Lanka will host 12 in three venues, including one semi-final; while Bangladesh will stage 8 at two grounds as well as the opening ceremony on 17 February 2011.[24]

On 1 June 2010, the first phase of tickets for the 2011 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have been put on sale following a meeting of the tournament's Central Organising Committee in Mumbai. The tickets have been priced affordably, with the cheapest costing 20 cents US in Sri Lanka, the committee said.[25] In January 2011, the ICC declared the Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata, India to be unfit and unlikely to be complete by 27 February when it was scheduled to host a match between India and England. As a result, the match was moved to Bangalore.[26]

    Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony was held in Bangladesh. The venue for the opening ceremony was Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka,Bangladesh. The event took place on 17 February 2011, 2 days prior to the first match of the World Cup.

    Prize

    The ICC World Cup Trophy

    Trophy

The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy is a running trophy, presented to the winning team since 1999. It was designed by Garrard & Co within 2 months. The original trophy is kept with the ICC at headquarters in Dubai. The winning team is given a replica. The only difference between the two is that the original has the names of all the previous winners inscribed on it.

    Prize money

The 2011 Cricket World Cup winning team would be taking home a prize money of US$ 3 million and US$ 1.5 million for runner-up, with the International Cricket Council deciding to double the total allocation for the coveted tournament to US$ 10 million. The decision was taken at the ICC Board meeting which was held inDubai on April 20, 2010.[27][28] The total prize money on offer for the tournament for the teams placing from 1st to 8th is US$7.48 million.[29]

As usual the bulk of the net proceeds of the tournament will be distributed by the ICC to its member associations. This is expected to amount to several hundred million U.S. dollars.

    Venues

All the Indian stadiums for the 2011 World Cup had been finalized [30] earlier, and the venues of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were finalised in late October 2009. All the venues of the 2011 Cricket World Cup were announced on 2 November 2009 in Mumbai by the International Cricket Council. Two new stadiums in Sri Lanka have been constructed for the World Cup. They are located in Kandy and Hambantota.[31]
