NEW BROADBAND SERVICE FOR KOLKATA

Kolkata: Wednesday, September 01, 2010.

 

BSNL, Calcutta Telephones is going to launch a new broadband service from 15 September 2010 in the city on trial basis, informed Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Shri Sachin Pilot in Kolkata today. The Minister disclosed that there are presently 41.76 lakh mobile subscribers of BSNL in West Bengal Circle to which 11 lakhs more would be added during 2010-11, to ensure that mobile services are delivered to the remotest locations. As well as to improve the quality of services, 339 more mobile towers would be added in the current financial year, taking the total number of towers in the state to 3821. The Minister added that two more telephone exchanges would be added in the coming month.

 

He also said that to ensure that villages enjoy the same level of connectivity as the urban areas, 3956 village public telephones would be added in the current financial year. Village telephones have already been provided in 34555 villages. In areas where conventional connectivity is not possible, 83 satellite phones are proposed to be installed in the current financial year. 3G services have already been commercially launched in 44 places in the state. The Minister instructed that incentive linked marketing push is necessary to increase broadband penetration.

 

Regarding the Department of Posts, the Minister said that there are 9058 Post Offices in West Bengal, of which 94 post offices have been taken up for delivering world class services under Project Arrow programme of the Department of Posts. Shri Pilot said that nearly 350 Post Offices are planned for delivering computer-enabled financial services. He said that Department of IT is commited to enable the State Government to deliver e- services to one and all. Out of 6797 Common Services Centres planned in the state, 5578 have already been rolled out and the remaining would be implemented soon.
