Mirwaiz, Geelani Thank Iran For Support

Srinagar, Nov 20: A day after India sent a demarche to Iran for supreme leader's message to Hajj pilgrims, Kashmir's chief priest described Ayatullah Syed Ali Khamenei as great leader and said he would be shortly visiting New Delhi to meet Iranian envoy to convey thanks to Iranian leader and nation for their support to the oppressed people of Kashmir.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq who also heads the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference said there is a growing consensus on the global level on Kashmir dispute.

"Despite being at cross-purposes even Washington and Beijing have one voice on Kashmir that 'it's a dispute and there will be no peace in south Asia till it's resolved," Mirwaiz told a news conference at his residence today.

Mirwaiz said the pro-freedom leadership here was encouraged by the statements emanating from Iran, China and the US, "which have clearly accepted Kashmir as a disputed territory".

"We are encouraged by the statement of support from Ayatollah Ali Khamnaei and China's continued policy to treat Kashmir as a dispute," he said adding the US President Barack Obama during his India visit had clearly stated that Kashmir was a "dispute pending resolution".

Mirwaiz said he will be shortly traveling to New Delhi to meet the envoys of Muslim countries and "apprise them about the situation in Kashmir and the interference in religious affairs by the government."

"I plan to raise political, human rights and issue of religious interference by the state with the envoys...will also meet Iranian ambassador to thank the country and apprise them of Kashmir situation," Mirwaiz said.

Meanwhile the Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani said the results of this five-month-long agitation are clear before all. Voices are being raised at the international level to resolve the Kashmir issue, and pressure is mounting on India.

Geelani said that the recent statement on Kashmir by Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, was encouraging, and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Kashmiri people.
