WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PARTITION OF PUNJAB AND BENGAL - LEAGUE OR CONGRESS?

One who is not well-informed about the  events which led to the Partition of India and consequently the creation of Pakistan will hastily come to conclusion and declare that Muslim League which demanded Partition of the country must surely have demanded the partition of the two Provinces (as States were called Provinces during the British Raj)  No.  It was not so. It was the Congress which  demanded Partition  and successfully got Bengal and Punjab partitioned whilst at the same time opposing the partition of the country. This write-up is on how the Congress blew hot and cold at the same breathe.

It was on the 5th of March 1947, the Congress Working Committee met and passed a Resolution demanding the Partition of Punjab. The Resolution, narrating the unpleasant events in Punjab, stated that to avoid compulsion of ant section, Punjab  should be divided  into two parts so that the pre-dominantly Muslim portion be separated from the predominantly non-Muslim  area. This Resolution was officially  presented to Lord Wavell the Viceroy (who was on the verge of retirement) on the 9th of March.

Gandhiji was very shocked and grieved. He wrote letters to Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel  asking them as to how the Working Committee  could have made such a preposterous  demand. He was shrewd enough to understand where the Resolution would ultimately lead to. Pandit Nehru  was unable to decide whether what was done by the Working Committee  (of course, with his knowledge and consent) was right or wrong. Hence, he was unable to reply and he did not reply.  The Iron Man of India Sardar  Patel, on  the other hand, sent his reply on the 24th of March stating: " It is difficult  to explain to you the resolution about  the Punjab,  It was adopted after deepest deliberation.  Nothing has been done in a hurry or without full thought.  That you have expressed your  views  against it, we learnt only from the papers.  But you are, of course, entitled to say  what you feel right.  The situation in Punjab is far worse than in Bihar. The Military has taken over  control. As a result, on the surface, things seem to have quietened down somewhat. But none can say when there may be a burst-up again. If that happens, I am afraid, even Delhi will not remain unaffected. But here, of course, we shall be able to deal with it…."

Pandit Nehru, being a pucca genteman, was more frank and truthful. He made it clear through his reply that the Congress REPRESENTED  ONLY THE NON-MUSLIMS AND NOT THE MUSLIMS  SINCE HE STATED THAT THE DEMAND FOR THE PARTITION WAS MADE BECAUSE THE HINDUS AND THE SIKS WANTED IT.  In simpler terms. THE WISHES  OF MUSLIMS – WHETHER  THEY WERE  FOR OR AGAINST  THE PARTITION WAS  OF NO CONSEQUENCE TO THE CONGRESS.

Only an inmate of a lunatic asylum will fail to realize and/or admit that  it is illogical  and incongruous, to say the least, for the Congress  to demand the partition of a Province whilst opposing tooth and nail sans rhyme or reason the partition of the country. Am I wrong?
