ROHTAK: At Bopara, around five or six youths assaulted Bhoop Singh with lathis on Tuesday. The victim, who is a Dalit and a relative of the newly-elected sarpanch, also named Bhoop Singh, was beaten up following a verbal duel on the ongoing controversy over the recently conducted panchayat elections. The sarpanch had triggered the casteist row by participating in the polls despite a call for boycott on the ground that all major panchayat and zila parishad posts had been reserved for Scheduled Castes.

Claiming that certain elements from both the communities were trying to vitiate the atmosphere by engaging in casteist row, former zila parishad chairman Miterpal Singh told TOI, "The issue (caste conflict) is being raised without any reason as there has never been any rift between communities in our village. If the entire village is unanimous on a issue and a certain person prefers to disagree, then others, too, have a right to disagree or break ties with him."

Meanwhile, the Dalits have written to chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, asking him to ensure their security.

NEW DELHI: A day after Hisar couple, Sonia and Sunil, parted ways under pressure from their village panchayat to end their five-day inter-caste marriage, the bride did a turnaround on Tuesday saying she was forced into wedlock. Sunil is now likely to face charges under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as Sonia is a dalit.

"The action would follow Sonia's statement before the judicial magistrate," a police officer said. "Sunil faces criminal charges under the Act if the allegations are correct."

Sonia alleged that Sunil had threatened to kill her brother if she declined his marriage proposal. "He then took me to an Arya Samaj temple to solemnise and register the marriage," she said, alleging that Sunil also took away her jewellery.
