American Game in Egypt is still on Egypt: the moment of triumph has not come yet Javed Jamil For 30 years, the US did not only tolerate Mubarak but also supported him and treated him as its lover boy. He was acceptable because he was pro-West, the only criterion to determine whether any ruler/government is good or bad. If someone is close to West, he is good enough even if he is a dictator of worst kind. If someone is against West, he is a demon even if he is a man of utmost integrity and is loved by his people. Obama chose Mubark's Egypt as the place of his address to the Muslim world, which signaled that Mubarak is the ideal the Muslim World must look for, in the eyes of Obama. Till three weeks back, West did never talk of Obama as a man who needed to go. Then all of a sudden, the people mustered enough courage to vent their long wounded feelings to call for his immediate ouster. Gauging the feelings of the people, Obama immediately went on the damage control. He was almost daily delivering his statements calling for "smooth transition" of power without ever calling for Mubarak's resignation or regime change, something which has been the policy of America since 9/11 when it comes to anti-West regimes. He wanted not to be hated by the people but to at the same time ensure that the "smooth transition" meant nothing but continuation of pre-American elements in power. Of course, the biggest factor for America's support to any new dispensation remains its acceptance of the treaty with Israel. And he seems to have succeeded. The military has made it clear that it will continue all its international obligations, which effectively means its close relations with Israel. Amidst the jubilation, people seem to forget that the power still continues to be in the hands of the military and the ministers that propped Mubark regime for three decades. Egyptian Revolution is still in its nascent stage.
