 | 80% schoolkids in UT smokers rajan walia, TNN, Feb 10, 2011, 04.17am IST CHANDIGARH: As many as 80% teens in Chandigarh ' aged between 14 and 16 ' light their first fag in school at the age of 14. Highlighting that teenage smoking is on the rise, an ASSOCHAM survey has revealed that it has increased due to smoking by parents, easy availability of tobacco, lack of parental involvement, approval of smoking by siblings and lower self-esteem among teenagers. Chandigarh ranks seventh in the 11-city teen-smoking survey with Mumbai, Goa and Cochin topping the list. The extensive survey conducted by ASSOCHAM on 3,000 teenagers (14-19) in 11 metropolitan cities between November 2010 and January 2011 revealed that the amount of cigarettes that are purchased illegally for underage teens ' that too in a smoke-free city like Chandigarh ' is astounding. ''Result shows that children start experimenting with cigarettes at a very early age. The most dramatic increase in regular smoking occurs at about 14 for both boys and girls, although the level of regular smoking reported is consistently higher among boys than girls at age 15 to 19 years,'' says the study. In Chandigarh, 90% teenagers told the survey team members that they tend to imitate their parents, In case their parents, either one of them, is a smoker, then they also pick up the habit from them. Nearly 85% of them blamed their friends for forcing them into smoking. Often, they feel a need to be part of a peer group. And 79% were found to be those coming from broken families. They either take to drugs or alcohol and smoking is also a way out for them to escape from harsh realities of life.
