LUCKNOW: In a joint operation, department of labour and Childline rescued 26 child labourers in the city. The children were working in various restaurants and eating joints in Vikasnagar, Aliganj, Kapoorthala, Kaiserbagh and Hussainganj.
The teams were led by R B Lal, deputy labour commissioner, Lucknow and labour enforcement officers A K Verma, N P Singh and S K Pandey. The team had to face opposition from the traders during the operation.
The children were later produced before child welfare committee at Shishu Grih on Prag Narain Road. The children rescued were between 10-14 years of age. All belonged to below poverty line (BPL) families and were forced to work for food, shelter and some money to help their parents.
Vinod Chandra, member CWC, said that the rescued children have been given temporary shelter at the government children home on Mohaan Road. Directions have been issued to locate parents of the children. All restaurant owners have been served notices.
Childline director, Anshumali Sharma said that this is merely the tip of an iceberg when it comes to the menace of child labour. Over 5,000 children are working illegally in the unorganised sector, he added. |
